Ovulation is described as the release of egg from ovary which can be fertilized by sperm or dissolved during menstruation. Ovulation is also known as the fertile period of a woman which leads to conception. During ovulation, one egg is released and it can survive for 24 hrs after leaving the ovary.
TRACKING OVULATION PERIOD:
Most women ovulate from 11-21 days counting from the last day of their monthly flow. A woman’s normal cycle is from 28- 32 days, though some have shorter or longer cycle. It is vital to track your cycle, there are some tools like ovulation kits available to aid women monitor their peak fertile day.
Ovulation kits assist women to track their fertile window though there is no evidence that using it leads to pregnancy. The best advice is constant sex throughout your cycle to maximize your conception chances.
HOW TO USE OVULATION KITS
There are different ovulation kits, always read the description or guide before usage.
- Urine- Based Ovulation kit: collect small quantity of urine with a container or cup, dip the stick in the urine bring it out and leave it for some minutes. Is advised to use morning urine. This test is basically to check the increase in Luteinizing hormone (LH). During ovulation, about 5 times of LH is released and this triggers the ovulation. Use this kit one or two days before ovulation.
- Salivary ferning kits: This is used along side with a pocket sized microscope to detect the estrogen content in saliva, which is identified with increase in salt level in the saliva.
Drop some saliva on the slide and allow it to dry, the use the microscope to check whether there is any ferning or not. Use the result to compare what you have on the instruction.
Note: This exercise is to be carried out before you eat in the morning and there should be no bubbles in the saliva
